Progressive Relaxation is a gentle and effective practice that helps the body release tension and settle into deep relaxation. Originally developed by Edmund Jacobson, this technique guides you through intentionally tensing and then releasing different muscle groups, helping you become more aware of where you may be holding stress in your body.
As each area softens, many people experience a growing sense of ease, calm, and letting go. The contrast between tension and release can make relaxation feel especially deep and restorative. Because of this, Progressive Relaxation can be a wonderful practice to do in the evening or just before preparing for sleep.
Important: This practice may not be suitable if tightening muscles is uncomfortable for you, or if you have a condition that could be worsened by brief muscle tension.
